Solving the dropout dilemma and violence in schools

In a world of supersonic change, new models of schooling are
emerging around the world. Many of these new methods are covered in
detail in the 544-page hardcover new edition of the world's
biggest-selling nonfiction book in 1999, The Learning
Revolution.
.
Co-authors Gordon Dryden and Dr. Jeannette Vos have selected
these high schools as among their highly recommended models for the
future:
.
The Kaizen model: Mt. Edgecumbe High
School, in Sitka, Alaska. This is possibly the world's foremost
example based on the Japanese business principle of Kaizen, or
continuous improvement. Students set their own goals (miles higher
than most teacher-set goals) and run four pilot companies as they
learn a variety of talents and skills. (Page
400.)
.
The integrated studies model: Freyberg High School,
Palmerston North, New Zealand. In a typical week, students might
spent five days on a mountaineering field trip as they research
history, geography, ecology – and then record their findings using
English, mathematics and computers. The three elements of integrated
studies: (1) Interesting out-of-class project activities, combining
research and exploration. (2) Student use of the computer as a tool
for information processing and analysis. (3) History, geography,
science, math, economics, writing, computing and other studies are
linked together, not taught separately. (Page
412).
.
Lemshaga Barnakademi, in Sweden – a combination preschool,
elemetnary school and high school, a school that also blends nature
inn with the world's best interactive technology. (Page
490).
.
The Overseas Family School, in Singapore. A private
international school, with students from 26 nationalities, which
also runs from preschool through to high school and beyond. (Page
499.)
.
The Learning Revolution covers many more models from around
the world.
