| How to skim-read a book o Try and define first what information you are seeking. o Then hold your book about 20 inches away from your eyes: far enough to see the whole page. o Run your index finger down the center of the page, with your eyes looking just above your fingertip. o Move the finger so fast that you do not have time to stop at each word and pronounce it to yourself. *Generally, this advice applies to nonfiction reading, where you are reading to gain information for a specific purpose. The same techniques can be used to read fiction, but even most good readers prefer to read fiction more slowly, so they can savor the atmosphere, the plot and the word-pictures. |
